Types of Resumes


There are several types of resumes that different jobs seekers can use to apply for a job opening. The type of resume an applicant should use depends on their level of education and their work experience. Depending on these factors, job seekers are therefore supposed to select the type of resume that can best highlight their strong points. The most common types of resumes are chronological, functional, combination and modified chronological resumes.

What is the difference between these resumes? Chronological resumes usually have a list of the employees work experience listed from the most recent one followed by educational background. They also include major achievements of the employee for all the listed past jobs. For people who recently graduated, the educational background is listed first then followed by their work experience, major achievements and experience.

This type of resume is highly recommended for a job seeker who has had major achievements in their previous jobs and has worked with respectable organizations. It can also be used by people who have held higher positions in their previous jobs. This resume highlights well the strong points of an employee using past experience and gives the employee a better chance of getting the attention of an employer.

The second type of resume is the functional resume. A functional resume emphasizes the skills a potential employee has acquired over time rather than the work experience. This type of resume works best for people who do not have as much relevant experience and can also be effective in closing time gaps required in the employment history section of a resume. This type of resume is not highly recommended as many employers prefer to see the chronological order of work experience of job applicants and their major achievements.

The other type of resume is the combination of these two resume styles. It contains skills that a job applicant has acquired over time and work experience. Skills and personal strengths are usually listed first followed by work experience which is listed in chronological order starting with the most recent.  A combination resume can be useful when an employee has many skills which are not related to the job being applied for. They enable applicants to highlight the need of their skills to the position they are applying for.

The last type of resume that one can use is the modified chronological resume. This resume categorizes the work experience of an employee in to groups like Research experience, Marketing experience and Branding experience. Job experience is listed in reverse chronological order under these categories. Modified chronological resumes allow employees to list the most relevant experience category first. This means that if your recent job is not as relevant to the position you are applying for, you can categorize it under the last categories of your work experience in your resume.

Depending on your work experience and the type of position you are applying for, you should be able to evaluate and understand which of these resume types can best sell you to your potential employer. Different employers prefer specific types of resumes.

No matter the type of resume you settle for, the resume you write must highlight your key competencies especially those that the employer is looking for. After all, that is the least a resume can do for you.
